Will the Disabilities Bill in Belize Prevent Tragedies Like Trayson’s?

January 3, 2025

Trayson Gibson, an eighteen-year-old from Belize City, lost his life tragically in a shooting on Rivero Street, highlighting his struggles and the broader issues faced by people with disabilities in Belize. Trayson’s life had already been profoundly impacted by another shooting in 2022 that left him paralyzed from the waist down and reliant on a wheelchair. Despite these overwhelming challenges, Trayson’s resilience and determination were evident in his persistent efforts to find employment to support his grandmother, who was his primary caretaker.

Trayson’s quest for a job, despite his disability, was fraught with obstacles. Many companies, including call centers, lacked wheelchair accessibility, making them unwilling to hire him. This constant rejection left him feeling frustrated and dejected, yet he never gave up hope. In a cruel twist of fate, just as he was finally called back by a potential employer, his life was abruptly ended.

Earlier this year, Belize made significant legislative progress by passing the Disabilities Bill, a historic piece of legislation aimed at promoting equal opportunities and preventing discrimination against individuals with disabilities. This bill is particularly noteworthy for its emphasis on the right to employment and mandates that both government and private buildings ensure accessibility for people with disabilities, including those in wheelchairs, within a year.

Minister of Human Development, Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, who introduced the bill, emphasized that the legislation is designed to hold relevant parties accountable for ensuring accessibility. The bill includes access to employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services, representing a tremendous step forward in promoting the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities in Belizean society.

Trayson Gibson’s story underscores the numerous challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in securing employment and accessing opportunities. His determination and resilience serve as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for inclusive policies and accessibility measures. The recently passed Disabilities Bill aims to address these critical issues by ensuring equal rights and opportunities for people with disabilities, highlighting the importance of accessible buildings and fair employment practices.

The passage of the Disabilities Bill marked a pivotal moment in the fight against discrimination and for the inclusion of all Belizeans, irrespective of their physical abilities. It is hoped that this new law will bring about meaningful changes and ensure that the tragedy faced by Trayson Gibson will not be in vain. It represents a significant step toward a more inclusive and equitable society where people with disabilities can fully participate and thrive.
