Workforce Center Offers $250K to Upskill Local Employees

In a competitive economic landscape where businesses consistently face the dual challenges of attracting skilled talent and retaining their most valuable employees, a new local initiative is providing a substantial financial boost to tackle the issue head-on. The Pikes Peak Workforce Center is injecting a quarter-million dollars into the regional economy, specifically earmarked for employers in El Paso and Teller counties to invest in their current staff. This program offers a strategic solution for companies aiming to enhance their operational capabilities, improve employee satisfaction, and secure a competitive edge by developing a more proficient and versatile workforce from within. By funding targeted training and professional development, the initiative directly addresses the skills gap and employee turnover, enabling local businesses to build resilience and foster long-term growth without the high costs typically associated with external recruitment and onboarding for specialized roles. This proactive investment in human capital is designed to elevate the entire regional workforce ecosystem.

1. Program Framework and Strategic Goals

The Employee Development Funds program, fully financed by a $250,000 grant from the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), is meticulously designed to support local companies in building a more skilled workforce and preventing potential layoffs. During the selection process, the program gives preference to businesses operating within high-demand industries that are critical to the region’s economic vitality, including healthcare, information technology, advanced manufacturing, hospitality and tourism, and cybersecurity. According to Becca Tonn, the Communications & PR Manager for the Pikes Peak Workforce Center, this initiative presents a significant opportunity for the business community. Tonn stated, “We hope a diverse array of businesses and nonprofits will apply for this funding, which is aimed at enhancing economic sustainability through employee training and skill development.” The emphasis is on empowering companies to expand the duties and career pathways for their current employees, thereby fostering a more dynamic and stable employment environment across both El Paso and Teller counties.

A key strength of this initiative lies in the flexibility granted to participating employers, who have the autonomy to select the most relevant and impactful training programs tailored to their specific business objectives and employee needs. This customized approach ensures that the investment yields practical results and directly addresses operational challenges or growth opportunities. The scope of eligible training is extensive, covering a wide array of sectors and skill levels. For the technical and industrial fields, options include courses in AC/DC electricity, advanced hydraulics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and total productive maintenance (TPM). In the healthcare sector, funding can support vital certifications like the CNA training course. Meanwhile, technology-focused companies can leverage the funds for cutting-edge training in areas such as MongoDB development or Microsoft 365 Security. The program also recognizes the critical importance of soft skills and strategic management, offering support for executive leadership training, Lean manufacturing principles, and Six Sigma methodologies.

2. Application Guidelines and Critical Timeline

To ensure all interested employers have a clear understanding of the application process and program requirements, attendance at a virtual “How to Apply” information session is mandatory. These concise and informative sessions are designed to walk business leaders and HR managers through the necessary steps to secure funding, offering practical advice on how to craft a successful application. The workforce center has scheduled multiple sessions to accommodate different schedules, with a meeting on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 2-3 p.m., followed by two more opportunities on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, and Thursday, January 15, 2026, both from 10-11 a.m. These sessions are an invaluable resource for any organization in El Paso or Teller counties looking to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Prospective applicants can register for one of the mandatory virtual meetings through the Pikes Peak Workforce Center’s official website, which contains all the necessary details and links for participation in these essential preparatory events.

Prospective applicants must adhere to a strict timeline to be considered for the funding. The final deadline for all applications is January 30, 2026, at 8 p.m., with no exceptions. Following a thorough review process, the official funding announcements will be made on February 13, 2026, allowing successful companies to move forward with their training plans promptly. A crucial final deadline is the training completion date of May 22, 2026, by which all funded educational activities must be concluded. It is important for applicants to understand the financial origins of this program; 100% of the $250,000 available is financed with Federal money through the Dislocated Worker program, an umbrella of the WIOA. The program received no funding from non-governmental sources, highlighting a direct federal investment in the upskilling of the local workforce. This clear financial structure underscores the program’s public service mission to bolster the regional economy by enhancing employee skills.

A Strategic Investment in Regional Talent

The initiative launched by the Pikes Peak Workforce Center represented a pivotal moment for businesses in El Paso and Teller counties. By providing direct financial support for employee training, the program offered a tangible solution that empowered companies to invest in their most valuable asset: their people. This strategic allocation of federal funds was not merely a short-term fix but a forward-thinking investment in the long-term economic resilience and competitiveness of the region. The opportunity allowed numerous local employers to enhance their teams’ capabilities, adapt to new industry demands, and foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Ultimately, the program did more than just prevent layoffs or fill skill gaps; it planted the seeds for a more skilled, agile, and robust workforce that was better prepared to drive innovation and sustain economic prosperity for years to come.
